The Dane County Department of Planning & Development's Planning Division is pleased to announce "Planning Notes," an ongoing series of informative brochures on a variety of land use and community development topics. "Planning Notes" are intended for local planning commissioners, elected officials, staff and planning consultants, and serve as policy guides to the "nuts and bolts" and "hot topics" of planning in Dane County.
The first four issues of "Planning Notes" are now available online HERE

Disposition of Old
microwaves - John
Reindl, Dane Co.
Several citizens have called recently on what they can do
with old microwaves.
While we would prefer that they be recycled, the state law
that previously banned them from landfills has been amended so that they
can be landfilled if they do not have a capacitor that contains PCBs. (See
statutes 287.07(1m)(a) and 299.45(7))
These capacitors were mainly found in older microwaves.
Thus, if the capacitor has been removed or if the capacitor does not
contain PCBs(some microwaves are labeled on the outside.), it can be placed
in with other trash.
The only recycling firm that I am aware of that accepts
microwaves is Moor's Salvage, at 6421 Edna Taylor Parkway in Monona, phone
223-9220. When I talked to them this morning, they said that the charge was
$10.
You might also want to encourage your citizens to check
with the store that they buy a new microwave; several will take back an old
microwave as part of the purchase of a new appliance.
