Building Permits – Town

TOWN BUILDING PERMITS

* The construction of new buildings, including accessory buildings, and all additions or additional stories (except the ones exempted under section 1.07 of the Building Ordinance) require approval from the Town of Perry and Dane County.  Details on how to apply are listed below.

* Town policies on buildings and their location can be found in the Town’s Land Use Plan and Building Ordinance.

* Dane County’s zoning ordinances on building locations can be found in Chapter 10 of Dane County Zoning Ordinances.  *Before submitting an application to the Town, you should confirm with the County that the size and proposed location of the building conform to the County Zoning requirements.

* Before applying for a building permit with the Town, you may wish to appear informally before the Town of Perry’s Land Use Committee to explain your intent and be advised as to concerns that will need to be addressed before you submit your request.  Please note that this appearance is for informational purposes only, is not an official request to the Town, and the Town will not act without a filed application and the proper fee paid.

* Building Permits will not be issued until a site plan has been approved by the Town of Perry.

* No Building Permit will be issued until the driveway (if needed) is constructed according to the specifications of the Driveway Ordinance.  See the page titled Driveway Construction Permit Application for more information.

County Requirements: According to Dane County Planning and Development, rural landowners often misunderstand County permit requirements and believe some buildings are exempt from County permits.  Most are not.  To find out which buildings need permits and which don’t, contact the Dane County Planning and Development Office.  They will explain their procedures and provide the necessary forms to complete.  It’s wise to check with both the County and the Town before starting so you understand the requirements you must follow and the information you need to gather to satisfy both entities as you proceed.
